It is the conviction of the Church that every human being is assigned an angel of God to be his guardian, an angel who has as his task to lead us to the place that God has prepared, heaven. Not everyone listens attentively to their guardian angel, however, as he seeks to enlighten them through the voice of conscience to avoid sin, or gives them good inspirations to the love and service of God and neighbor.

Certainly Padre Pio was one who did, from the earliest years of life, so that God granted him the vision not only of his own guardian angel but those of others. Many times it was through the guardian angel of a person that their need was brought to Padre Pio's attention, who then prayed for that person.

It has been documented by several authors that Padre Pio once told his confessor, Padre Augustino, that he had daily encounters with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Michael the Archangel and his own guardian angel. He went on to say that this had been occurring for as long as he could remember. Years before, he thought it not important to mention his heavenly visitors because he believed this happened to everyone.

Padre Pio had the ability, not only to communicate with, but also to see into the angelic world almost at will and at any time. This great gift, which was granted him, was not only attributable to his outstanding sanctity but also to the power and authority of the priesthood. Another great Franciscan priest, St. Anthony of Padua is reported to have said, “Thus will it be with those who place their entire trust in Jesus Christ. They will be favored with heavenly visions; they will live in the company of angels.”

If there was ever an earthly authority on angels, it was Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio). He talked to them regularly as you and I talk with our family and friends. He sent them all over the world on “missions” to his spiritual children, and received messages back via the angels as often as we receive mail.

Here is Padre Pio's Daily Prayer to His Guardian Angel:

Angel of God,
my guardian,
to whom the goodness
of the Heavenly Father entrusts me.
Enlighten,
protect and guide me
Now and for ever.
Amen.
